Sydney CBD

Gala Project

Exploring the field in Sydney CBD, specifically sited in Event Cinemas at George Street, about the relationship between architecture, urban environment and social context. A new and slightly different project to compare with other projects in where we developed architectural proposals about the institution. 'The Centre of Resilience', in debating and defining of what resilience is, than translating into architectural strategies. In response of the question, our studio reflects on notions of temporary and the passing of time through the public space of transition, gather and reflection in the lens of "Life & Death".

MAJOR AREA IN THE FIELD

As a functional area, the Event Cinemas has the amazing crowds located in the middle of the city, foremost known as a live space of a central area. In this active space, few of the spaces have been used in different various of categories; cinemas, game arcades, restaurants and billiard pool, which attract the societies to visit.

As a certain way to describe the event cinema as a gathered space in a large amount of people, the communities travel from the nearest public transports of Town Hall and Central stations, then spread to different situated area such as, World Square, Chinatown, Darling Harbour, QVB, Westfield and others. These anticipate that the site has been, consequently, defined as a land of complex relationships to shopping, entertainments, educations, careers and others

REDUDANT AREA

Interrogating the existing urban field of networks and infrastructures in a complex and dynamic system, influenced from Sydney’s southern CBD area that is embedded with redundancy, underdeveloped and urban infrastructure conditions in between of two key transport interchanges of Central Station in the south and Town Hall Station in the north. The main learning objective is to strategize of how architecture would adapt with the changing of conditions in the urban field, establish great tactics as a programmatic and performable public space and collaborate with developed innovative design solutions. With these counterpoints, the architectural overview is to construct, adapt and recover the conditions in term of “resilience”.

In response of the question of “resilience”, our studio, specifically the Life & Death (Health), reflects on the engagement of public spaces for temporarily and passing of time. The main focus of our proposal is to function as a public space that is able to interact and adapt when the resilience strikes, in providing health services. The building itself has different interventions that are able to change and adapt in some particular spaces whereas the programs can be shifted into other functions in term of the question of “resilience”.

PROJECT GALA

Starting from this level, most of the programs manipulate the whole space, specifically in this level, it consists only health services, such as training demo, consolation area, pharmacies and other medical services

In this area, exhibition and workshops are placed in this whole space level, creating a linear circulation from the entrances that is able to walk through the space around while maintaining natural lighting in objecting the exhibitions.

This area consists health service improvement such as gym, basketball hall and other health programs. This level is to function as a public area in giving great maintenance for people to keep their health.

The last level consists two different types of spaces’ conditions, enclosed and opened spaces. The programs in this level are similar with level 6 in providing health service improvement in maintain the health well as such as yoga, dance class and others.

The placement of the program in level 1, namely the childcare, library and medical centre are interacted with the public spaces relating to view attractions, communal and infrastructure conditions with a great void in the entrance through George Street.

This particular level consists most alike as the level 1 which still remaining the same programs which are child care, library and medical centre which are extended from first to the second level. The void in the entrance is extended to level 2 as well to show the program conditions.

Medical centre is extended to level 3 and manipulating most of the spaces while understanding the importance of the programs. Library is extended as well but childcare space has been replaced with office uses for the medical centre.
